What’s up with Terrence Malick these days? In his nearly 40 year career he has so far finished a total of five films, which means he’s made one film every eight years or so. But suddenly things seem to be changing for him. His latest film, Tree of Life, which we liked a lot, was shot way back in 2008 (and was originally supposed to premiere around Christmas 2009) but premiered only a few months ago. Since then he has shot a whole another film. A film which has yet to get a title (in some places it’s being called Burial but that’s unconfirmed) and stars Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams (pictured above) as well as Javier Bardem, Rachel Weisz, Olga Kurylenko and Jessica Chastain. It will probably be released sometime next year, but this being a Terrence Malick movie we might not even see it until 2013. And now it has been announced he will be shooting yet another film in early 2012. Christian Bale has been cast in the lead role while such actresses as Rooney Mara and Mia Wasikowska are being considered for the female lead. So far that’s all that is known about this project.
Aside from these films he’s also working on an IMAX documentary titled Voyage of Time that is described on its IMDB site as “[a]n examination of the birth and death of the universe.” It will be narrated by Brad Pitt and Emma Thompson and is set for release in 2013.
It’s hard to say what’s gotten over him, maybe he’s just making up for all that “lost” time or maybe he’s just tired of working so slowly. We at Filmophilia are at the least very glad to see more films from Malick coming in the next few years rather than having to wait almost a decade for one film.
