Michael Fassbender to Star in Assassin’s Creed Adaptation. Cue Excitement.
The Assassin’s Creed games from Ubi Soft are huge. Selling 30 million copies of a new intellectual property since 2007 is an amazing achievement. Recently Ubi Soft have been positioning some of their key franchises for movie treatment. Assassin’s Creed was set to be produced by Sony Pictures (a la Prince of Persia: Sands of Time at Disney) but something went awry there so now Ubi Soft is funding the project independently. And one of Filmophilia’s absolute favorites is apparently attached to the production. Variety is reporting that the dashing, debonair Michael Fassbender will star in and co-produce the film.
Color us super excited, especially seeing how interesting the plot is. The video game series, set in the near future, revolves around a bartender (Desmond Miles) who’s a direct descendant of a bloodline of assassins. Throughout history this brotherhood of assassins has clashed with the Templars and now the brotherhood needs to access Desmond’s genetic memories to discover the whereabouts of an ancient powerful artifact. To do this Desmond has to go into a Matrix-like construct and play out the lives of his ancestors, through the medium of assassinating historical figures. The first game took place in Jerusalem and the surrounding area in 1094, the second game in Renaissance Italy (this entry also had a spin of series that expanded throughout Europe) and the hotly anticipated third game will take place in America during the revolutionary war.
Yes, this could be a supremely interesting film (probably series of films) and Sassy Fassy, Ubi Soft’s first and only choice, will undoubtedly knock this one out of the park. It’s inevitable really.
Assassin’s Creed doesn’t have a set release date but Assassin’s Creed 3 (the video game) comes out on October 30th for all major gaming systems.
