Spike Jonze (Where the Wild Things Are), has quietly been working hard on his next feature, but left us much in the dark on the film. Very little has been known about the film besides the fact that Joaquin Phoenix stars alongside Rooney Mara, Amy Adams, and Olivia Wilde. Originally, it was rumored that the film centers on a man who falls in love with the voice of a Siri-like computer device, and now a bit more light has been shed on the film’s plot by way of an official synopsis. The official synopsis was posted to the website of the film’s production company, the messenger Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures.
Here is the official synopsis:
In the not so distant future, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely writer purchases a newly developed operating system designed to meet the user’s every needs. To Theodore’s surprise, a romantic relationship develops between him and his operating system. This unconventional love story blends science fiction and romance in a sweet tale that explores the nature of love and the ways that technology isolates and connects us all.
So it’s not quite Siri, but it’s still quirky and offbeat in a way that only Jonze could conceive. News of the film’s title has also arrived with the pic simply called Her. Jonze wrapped filming this summer, but the film doesn’t have a release date just yet. In all likelihood it’ll make the film festival rounds next year before hitting theaters. Either way, its hard not to get ecstatic at the prospect of a new Spike Jonze film on the way with a wholly original premise and a wonderfully talented cast.
