You may have heard about this movie before, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, starring Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton as the titular siblings. It has had a troubled path to the silver screens, having been pushed back almost a year. This international trailer might give us an idea as to why.
The reason? It looks terrible. Everything just looks bad. The line delivery and effects are particular offenders. The rest is just big, brash, dull and dumb, filled with seemingly impossible explosions. If there’s anything you don’t want to remind audiences of with your trailer it’s Van Helsing. Mission: Failed.
On the plus side, it does have Peter Stormare putting on a vaguely French accent and Gemma Arterton is particularly attractive, not that the generic costume design is doing her any good.
After The Bourne Legacy fizzled it might seem that Jeremy Renner’s career as a dashing, leading action man might be cut short, because this doesn’t look like it’ll do him any favors. Perhaps the R-Rating can make this somewhat enjoyable, but that seems highly unlikely.
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, written and directed by Tommy Wirkola (co-scripted by Dante Harper), comes out on January 11th, 2013. It stars Jeremy Renner, Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, Derek Mears and Thomas Mann.
