Michael Bay is synonymous with huge, overlong and explosive blockbusters. The man has built a career out of blowing shit up in slow motion to the tune of insane profit margins (except The Island, but hey, everybody gets one). That’s why you might be surprised when you hear that his next film, Pain & Gain, is a small, intimate, black comedy. Yes, from the master of explosions and demander of awesome.
The movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson, both of which have a certain knack for comedy, as bodybuilders that get wrapped up in kidnapping and all sort of crazy shit (set photos have shown them dressed as ninjas, so yeah). They’re supported by a rather impressive, and very male, cast consisting of Anthony Mackie, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Ken Jeong, Tony Shalhoub and Bar Paly.
Paramount today set the release date for April 26th, 2013 and released the, honestly, really great and clever poster, which you can check out below. The film will go up against almost nothing so chances of financial success seem quite high at the moment.
Looking forward to something different from Bay? He’s been making really weird films for years (seriously, those Transformers films are out of whack), but this seems like a return to something like Bad Boys. I will always stand by that being a fantastic action film, no matter how obnoxiously unbearable Martin Lawrence has been pretty much ever since. And keep in mind, Bay might secretly be a genius.
