Universal Pictures has just released a new 4-minute “Extended Look” at Les Misérables, now set to open on Christmas Day.  The film stars Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean, Russell Crowe as Javert, Anne Hathaway as Fantine, Amanda Seyfried as Cosette, and Eddie Redmayne as Marius.

Some may be pessimistic about Tom Hooper’s (The King’s Speech) ability to do Les Mis justice, but the look on Anne Hathaway’s face as she’s singing “I Dreamed a Dream” is enough to dispel my fears.  The cast seems eager to let fans know that yes, this is a film production, but they’re going to be singing live on camera, and here Hugh Jackman does a great job of explaining the difference that makes.  Frankly, I think Les Mis is so brilliant and Claude-Michel Schönberg‘s songs so beautiful that it doesn’t take much to convince me it’s going to be stunning.

Also, did somebody say Eddie Redmayne?  I’m in.
