Director Clint Eastwood’s remake of A Star Is Born has hit yet another block on the road to production. Initially Beyonce Knowles was set to star, but complications arose when the singer/actress became pregnant. At the same time Eastwood was having male lead casting difficulties. The director approached a number of top shelf talent including Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Cruise, Christian Bale, and Bradley Cooper, but failed to land a commitment. Now, to make matters worse, Eastwood has lost his female lead. Knowles dropped out of the project altogether due to scheduling issues.
A Star Is Born is about a movie star whose career is on the decline, but still finds time to helps a young showgirl ascend to stardom. However, tensions arise between them as her star shines while his descends further into obscurity. The remake is based off the 1954 version starring Judy Garland and James Mason, which picked up six Oscar nominations.
Variety reports that Knowles exited the role given her packed schedule. Without a firm start date for A Star Is Born, it was getting too difficult for her to schedule other projects/ventures. Eastwood has now apparently shifted his eyes onto Grammy-winning jazz musician Esperanza Spalding to take over the role. Esperanza can certainly sing, and will definitely look the part, but can she act? Don’t expect any discussions or offers to further until the director nails down a male lead.
Bale and DiCaprio already passed on the part, and when he was recently approached about the subject Bradley Cooper shrugged the idea off noting “there are like three versions already.” It’ll be interesting to see who Eastwood finally does grab for the male lead, that is if the project is still able to move forward.
