‘Son of Ernest’ Seeks to Reboot Dormant Franchise
RuckusFILM announced today that early production of a reboot of the Ernest franchise was underway. Son of Ernest will follow the 9 movies starring the late Jim Varney released in the 80s and 90s.
Screenwriter Dan Ewen (his claim to fame is working with the Farelly’s on their next project) is the man orchestrating the reboot with RuckusFILM’s Clarke Gallivan and Coke Sams, as well as John Cherry who created the original Ernest, will producing alongside Ewen.
“Ernest was this plucky little engine that could—against all odds. [...] Nine movies? That’s almost unheard of. Ernest struck a nerve, one we’re going to revisit. We plan to honor the originals and Jim Varney while birthing a new chapter that lies somewhere between not sucking and Earth-shatteringly funny” said Ewen.
No plot details have been revealed beyond that fact that it’ll involve Ernest’s long lost son. No actors have been mentioned but apparently some discussions have taken place. Currently there isn’t a director attached.
Along with the press release they sent out this poorly photo-shopped poster that spoofs the marketing for The Bourne Legacy. Take it as you will whether this in indicative of the eventual quality (or lack there of) of the end product.
So, is this your childhood getting raped or do you, like me, not really care at all? Perhaps there’s also a mythical third type of person that’s actually excited.
