Elysium Moved To Late Summer as Robocop is Pushed Back to Dumping Grounds
Neill Blomkamp‘s Elysium has been moved from its original March 2013 release date to August 9th, 2013. In turn that date was recently vacated by the Robocop reboot, which is now slated for February 7th, 2014.
It would seem that further work is needed for Robocop, and a push to the dumping ground of February doesn’t bode well, while the Elysium move would have more to do with marketing. That late summer date has traditionally been kind to smart sci-fi, with Rise of the Planet of the Apes becoming a hit last year and, of course, Blomkamp’s own District 9 garnering both financial and critical success, propelling it to a Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar nomination. Perhaps Sony think that they can repeat the feat.
