One word: Badass. Tom Cruise’s Reacher is a total badass. He’s out-Liam-Nessoning Liam Neeson at intense threatening phone calls on his relentless pursuit of justice. The calm intensity that they talked about is much more apparent here than in the teaser. Much of this feels like a grimmer take on 80s action cinema complete with a searingly evil German villain (Werner Herzog!). The fantastic music, the well cued humor and the pure badassery. It’s simply great. Clearly not the same people behind this that made the call on the awful poster recently released (which has since been replaced by one slightly better but still terrible).
And yes, those last two shots are brilliant.
This trailer set anticipation at an all time high, the entire thing looks great. With Cruise flying high off of the success of Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and a rumored drift away from Scientology we might be in for a proper resurgence from Cruise.
Jack Reacher, based on One Shot by Lee Child, also stars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall, Richard Jenkins and David Oyelowo. It was written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie. It hits cinemas December 21st in the US and on the 26th in the UK before completing its roll out before the end of January.
