Gwen Stacey Exits As Plans For ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ Trilogy Are Revealed
Back in August, Emma Stone revealed that she was hoping her character of Gwen Stacey in The Amazing Spider-Man would stay true to the comics and meet an unfortunate end. Well, as it turns out, it appears the actress is to get what she wants.
“Essentially the argument is that Spider-Man kills her by accident,” Stone explained about the appeal of the storyline, “So the person she loves is the person who kills her, which is the most horrifying thing. Apparently people unsubscribed to the comic book when that happened because they were just so flipped-out over it. But, of course, I want to stay true to that.”
Shailene Woodley, who is set to play Mary Jane Watson, is reported as “only a very small part in Amazing Spider-Man 2 but blossoms into an integral lead for the planned third movie as the studio seeks to build to the classic ‘Death of Gwen Stacy’ story.”
In the original comics, Green Goblin throws Gwen off the Brooklyn Bridge, and Spidey uses his web to catch her. The whiplash from the fall snaps her neck and kills her, leaving Spidey devastated. Enter Mary Jane, who helps Peter Parker grieve and in turn becomes his new flame. Heavy stuff for our friendly neighborhood Spider-man, but an undeniably potent storyline. And does this mean a return of the Green Goblin? One without Willem Dafoe?
